Llanidloes

Llanidloes is at the heart of the ancient medieval kingdom of Arwystli; the first town on the River Severn and an ideal spot to take a break.
Llanidloes was given a charter to hold a market in 1289 but existed at least 400 years before that.

The area around Llanidloes was once important for the mining of lead and silver, and the town had a thriving flannel industry. It was also notorious as a focus of industrial unrest during the 19th century Chartist revolt in 1839, a campaign for democratic rights prompted by the collapse of the local textile industry.

In the Elan Valley the second dam 'up-river' after Caban-coch is Garreg-ddu, which is sometimes called the 'submerged dam'.
Garreg-ddu plays an important part in providing a constant supply of water to Birmingham.

The lowest of the dams in the sequence of four built in the valley of the Elan River is Caban Coch dam. It is the simplest and most functional in appearance of all the dams, resembling a natural waterfall when the reservoir is full and the dam is in full spate with water pouring over the dam wall.
The Caban Coch dam contributes to the supply of water to Birmingham when water levels are normal, but it also provides compensation water to ensure that adequate flow is maintained in the Elan and the Wye downstream from the dams.
